To become a member of the United Methodist Church (UMC), a person must meet a few spiritual and practical criteria. Here’s a summary of the core requirements:
1. Profession of Faith in Jesus Christ
You must confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and commit to following Him.
This can be a first-time profession (for those new to Christianity) or a reaffirmation of faith (for those who have been baptized previously but want to join the UMC).
2. Baptism is an important step of obedience and public declaration of faith.
We offer baptism services several times a year, and would love to help you take this important step.
Baptism is required for membership. If you’ve already been baptized in another Christian tradition (e.g., Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterian), you do not need to be re-baptized. If you have never been baptized, the church (Cedar Grove) will offer baptism by sprinkling or pouring.
3. Vows of Membership
When joining, you are asked to affirm the following vows before the congregation: “Will you be loyal to Christ through The United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries?” You also vow to support the church with your:
• Prayers
• Presence (attending worship and participating in church life)
• Gifts (financial giving)
• Service
• Witness
4. Completion of a Membership or Confirmation Class
• This helps you understand UMC beliefs, history, structure, and mission.
• Youth usually go through a confirmation process, typically around age 12 or older.
• Adults may attend a membership class or meeting with the pastor.
5. Approval by the Local Church
After taking the vows and meeting the requirements, you are received into membership by the local congregation, often during a worship service.
